C is a programming language designed and written by “Dennis Ritchie", C is a powerful general purpose and most popular computer programming language. C is highly portable i.e., software written for one computer can be fun on another computer. C language is well suited for structured programming. An important feature of “C' is its ability to extend itself. AC program is basically a collection of functions.

Where C Stands
All programming languages can be divided into two categories:
(a) Problem oriented languages or High-level languages: These languages have been designed to give a
better programming efficiency, i.e., faster program development.
Ex: FORTRAN, BASIC, PASCAL, etc.
(b) Machine oriented languages or Low-level languages: These languages have been designed to give a
better machine efficiency, i.e., faster
program execution.
Ex: Assembly Language and Machine Language.
C stands in between these two categories. That's why it is often called a “Middle Level language", since it was designed to have both: a relatively good programming efficiency and relatively good machine efficiency.
